Meet Gene Baker

Bucking bulls have been my life’s work for more than twenty-five years.

Long before modern genetic tools were common, I was studying bloodlines, cow families, and what it really takes to build a winning bull. Today, Homestead Genetics is built on that same principle. We use proven mothers, powerful sire lines, and a hands-on approach to developing young bulls the right way.

Our program is home to some of the most influential bloodlines in the industry, including Billy Frank, the 2025 & 2024 Sire of the Year, along with Chop Chop, Secondhand Smoke, Pretty Lil Poison (2024 world champion heifer), and many more shaping today’s competitive arena. More than ninety championship wins and countless short round bulls are the result of years of experience, disciplined selection, and focusing on performance.

At our ranch in Anson, Texas, we run a full breeding and development program that includes donor cows, embryo transfer, yearling development, and annual production sales. But at the end of the day, my belief has always been simple. Great bulls start with great mothers.

We are proud of the progeny raised through Homestead Genetics and remain focused on continually improving the quality and consistency of the cattle in our program.

2X SIRE OF THE YEAR

Billy Frank is the backbone of Homestead Genetics and one of the most influential sires in the bucking bull industry. A two-time Sire of the Year and proven producer of world champions and short round performers, his genetics continue to shape winners at every level of the sport.

Chop Chop

Nearly half a million dollars in offspring earnings!

Chop Chop is one of the most reliable sires in the Homestead Genetics program and a bull we continue to count on year after year. His calves show up honest, buck hard, and keep proving themselves in competition. With offspring earnings exceeding $438,000 and climbing, his influence is undeniable.

Second Hand Smoke

Son of Billy Frank

Second Hand Smoke is a powerful young sire backed by two of the most influential bloodlines in the Homestead Genetics program. Sired by Billy Frank and a grandson of Houdini, he brings proven bucking power on both sides of his pedigree. With career earnings exceeding $110,000, his offspring show strong potential to compete at the highest levels.

What Sets Us Apart:

Gene Baker is widely recognized for his ability to evaluate and develop young bulls. Long before they ever enter futurity competition, he studies movement, attitude, cow family, and natural ability to identify the ones with real potential. That process blends instinct, patience, and decades of experience, allowing future champions to be spotted early and developed the right way.
